Asylum is a word used to describe situations where a country gives protection to someone fleeing from persecution in their own country.
Asylum is often given to people who are refugees. People can become refugees when they leave their own country but are unable to return because they have well-founded fears that they will be mistreated there.
People claiming asylum in England and Wales must have a legal representative. Find out more by visiting out 'Got a legal issue' page 'I'm claiming asylum'.
